Optical / Eddy current sorting

Optical sorting is a specialized application in the manufacturing industry, specifically for sorting and inspecting fasteners such as screws, bolts, nuts, washers, and other small hardware components. It offers several advantages over traditional manual or mechanical sorting methods. it involves the use of cameras, sensors, and sophisticated software and advanced image processing algorithms to visually inspect and categorize screws based on their visual characteristics and specific attributes.

What is PPM and how to calculate ?

PPM stands for parts per million, and is a measurement used to measure quality performance.

1 PPM means - one defect is found in a million or 1/1,000,000

Let's say if we had 15 pcs of defect found in a shipment of 100,000 pcs, then 15/100,000 = 0.0002 or 0.02 % defective rate; 0.0002 x 1,000,000 = 200 PPM

IS 0 PPM possible ?

"0 PPM" denotes the absence of defects in a mixture or solution, indicating no detectable traces of the substance in the analyzed sample. However, attaining a genuine "0 PPM" is immensely challenging in practice and its achievability hinges on several factors.

Numerous measures can be implemented to pursue this goal. Spring Lake aims to achieve it by exerting quality control to reduce production failures, rather than depending solely on pre-shipping inspections. Nonetheless, optical sorting remains crucial as the final quality control measure for defect removal.

What can we provide ?

  • For the majority of automotive orders, we can provide 25 to 50 PPM (parts per million).

  • For most industrial parts, we offer up to 200 PPM.

If you have specific requirements beyond these standard levels, please let us know, we can accommodate special demands upon request.

Application Range:

  • Wire Diameter: φ3.0~φ8.0 mm
  • Head Width : 5~15 mm
  • Head Height : 2~10 mm
  • Length Under Head : 5~80 mm
  • Sorting Speed: 100~600 pcs / min

Eddy current sorting is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to assess the hardness or material properties of metallic components or parts. It relies on the principle of electromagnetic induction to measure the hardness or hardness-related characteristics without causing damage to the tested object.

This technique is commonly employed in the fastener industry to ensure the quality and consistency of metal fasteners such as bolts, screws, and nuts. Fasteners will pass through a coil probe that generates an alternating magnetic field.

Advantages -

  • Eddy current sorting is fast and non-destructive.

  • It can detect defects, inconsistencies, or deviations in the material properties of fasteners.

  • The process is automated, improving efficiency.
